From Drawing to Site: Metal Engineering Delivery Process
A landmark steel structure does not appear on site by accident. It moves through five mandatory stages, each with its own failure modes. This article distills ASPER's Foshan factory playbook into a 5-stage framework — covering what to lock down at each step, what to inspect, and which three mistakes most often derail delivery.
1. Detail Design (where 80% of delivery risk is resolved)
- Node detailing — every connection type (weld / bolt / insert / chemical anchor) drawn explicitly; node drawings drive every downstream step.
- Bill of Materials (BOM) — spec, grade, quantity and unit weight down to every bar and plate; the BOM is what the MES system schedules production against.
- Sheet-metal unfolding — bend allowances and weld shrinkage baked in, so the workshop can cut directly from the drawing.
- BIM coordination — Revit/Tekla clash detection to resolve MEP conflicts and clearance issues before fabrication.
2. Sample Confirmation (do not skip the mockup)
- First-piece sealed sample — sets the reference for material, weld, coating and node construction in all subsequent inspections.
- On-site 1:1 mockup — fixed to the actual building substrate to verify colour, gloss and joints in real lighting.
- Four-party sign-off — owner / designer / GC / supervisor jointly sign and seal the mockup. It is the legal reference for later acceptance.
- Change control — any adjustment requires re-signing; old samples are voided. Verbal approvals do not authorise batch production.
3. Batch Production (four QC gates in the factory)
- Incoming inspection — mill certificates (304/316/Q235/aluminium) cross-checked against heat numbers and chemistry.
- In-process inspection — weld appearance, geometry, hole spacing, fit-up gaps.
- Coating inspection — dry-film thickness (PVDF ≥40μm), cross-cut adhesion, colour difference vs sealed sample.
- Outgoing inspection — every batch photographed and numbered for 10-year traceability.
4. Packing & Transport (protection decides arrival quality)
- Sequential numbering — arrival order = install order; no on-site searching.
- Soft padding — stainless and aluminium parts separated by pearl cotton / EVA; metal-to-metal contact is forbidden.
- Crating — steel racks for large parts, wooden crates for irregular shapes, transport-vibration tested.
- Per-crate packing list — number, spec, quantity and destination floor clearly labelled.
5. Site Install & Acceptance
- Bottom-up install order — main members first, nodes last; avoid overhead weld repair.
- Prefab-to-site numbering match — factory numbering aligns one-to-one with site numbers; bolted connections preferred over field welding.
- Acceptance dossier — mill certs, weld inspection reports, coating thickness tests, pull-out tests, concealed-works records.
- Closure loop — punch-list generated, rectified and re-inspected; only when records are archived is the project formally handed over.
Three Common Failure Modes
- ❌ Cutting without node drawings — site welding fails, parts must be cut and remade (loss of material + schedule).
- ❌ Batch production without sealed samples — endless disputes later, and verbal approvals carry no contractual weight.
- ❌ Acceptance without coating thickness verification — fading within months, no party can be held liable, retention money withheld.
