Decorative Manhole Covers & Linear Drain Grates: The "Invisible Ground" Detailing Guide
Decorative manhole covers and linear drain grates are where landscape projects most often go wrong — not because the wrong load class was picked, but because the details between drawing and finished paving were never resolved: covers that fight the paving module, concealed covers that crack at the edge, drain channels that flood in a downpour, grates that rattle under traffic. This guide is the execution companion to our selection guide (published 2026-08-14): it covers the nodes that turn a correct specification into a clean, durable, "invisible" ground plane.
1. Start with a Paving Layout
Premium paving is built to a module, and a cover that fights that module reads as a patch. Before fabrication, produce a paving layout:
- Size covers to the paving module — a 600×600 stone module gets a 600mm (or 590mm with joint) cover; 300mm brick gets a 300-module grate. Never force a round cover into a half-tile gap.
- Relocate access points where utilities allow — moving a cover onto a joint line or into a tree-pit border is cheaper than a custom shape.
- Alignment beats ornament — get the four edges flush with the paving joints first, then add the LOGO or pattern.
- Pre-cut corners and curves — radius and triangular zones should be factory-CNC cut to the CAD layout, not chased on site.
On large-scale work such as the Shenzhen Xiangmihu International Convention Center (470,000 m²), hundreds of drainage covers are laid out to the paving module, prefabricated and installed by number — the industry-standard way to achieve an "invisible ground".
2. Concealed Covers: Structure Beats "Hiding"
A concealed (invisible) cover looks like paving, but its life and load rating come from the stainless frame-beam structure, not the stone face. Three execution essentials:
- Frame-and-bucket type — 304/316 perimeter frame plus removable inner frame; stone (30–50mm) set into the frame; capacity calculated on the frame beam up to C250/D400. Rib spacing and weld quality are the load-critical details.
- Stone-grate type — continuous stone strips with drainage gaps; suits large plazas, but strip width and gaps must be checked against wheel loads.
- Level control — adjustable supports or mortar level the frame; finished surface within ±2mm of surrounding paving is the difference between "where is the cover?" and "why is that bump here?".
- Hinges + fall protection — hinged access with a limit stop, plus a safety mesh or plate inside the pit (mandatory in most codes).
3. Slot vs Grate: Choosing the Linear Drain

Three detailing rules:
- Size the flow section to the catchment — total slot area = slot width × length × number of slots; check against the local storm return period so the plaza never ponds.
- Slope and edge detail — channel falls ≥0.5% to the inlet; use an L-shaped edge where grate meets stone so paving edges don't spall.
- Anti-rattle clips — fix grates to the channel with clips or bolts; add stiffening ribs to thin 304 grates or they will deform under vehicle wheels.
4. Material & Finish by Scenario
- 304 vs 316 — 304 suits inland projects; coastal, spa-hotel and poolside sites must use 316 (molybdenum, chloride resistance) — the premium buys 10+ years without rust.
- Finishes — brushed (wear-resistant, first choice for public areas), fluorocarbon (stone-wood-look colors, 10+ year outdoor color retention) and PVD (black titanium / champagne gold, for covered or shaded areas).
- Slip resistance — textured or brushed surfaces in wet zones; avoid mirror finishes on any ramp over 3%.
- Theft resistance — locking covers or paving-integrated (non-recyclable-value) solutions for retail districts.
- Level — cover top within ±2mm of surrounding paving; no trip hazard, no ponding.
- Rattle — walk and drive over every unit; silence = anti-rattle pads / elastic locks actually fitted.
- Edges — clips locked, no corner lift.
- Welds — stainless frames smooth-ground, no black spots, no burrs.
- Safety — pit fall-protection mesh/plate installed; hinge limit stop verified.
