Stainless Steel Railing Surface Finishes: Brushed, Mirror, PVD & Fluorocarbon

Two railings made from the same 304 stainless can look completely different after five years — one stays bright, the other dulls and spots. The difference is almost always the surface finish. Here is what to specify so you get the finish you actually want.

1. The Four Main Finishes

FinishLookDurabilityTypical Use
Brushed 240# / 320# (hairline)Matte, fine grainScratch- and smudge-resistantIndoor stairs, residential balconies

2. Choosing by Environment

Indoor

Choose brushed for practicality — it hides fingerprints and scratches. Mirror polish suits feature areas only; large mirror surfaces are hard to keep clean in commercial spaces.

Outdoor balconies & rooftops

Specify brushed + fingerprint-resistant topcoat, or fluorocarbon painting to blend with the facade. Avoid bare mirror finish outdoors — water spots and oxidation are difficult to maintain.

Coastal / high-salinity areas

Use 316 stainless with a fluorocarbon or PVD layer to resist chloride attack. ASPER configures coastal railings as "316L + weather-resistant finish" by default.

Landmark / public buildings

PVD titanium gold or custom-colour fluorocarbon with complex profiles. Landmark projects such as the Shenzhen Natural History Museum and the Shenzhen International Exchange Center (Xiangmihu) demand batch-consistent colour and gloss — the factory must process each order as one controlled batch.

3. Fingerprint Resistance & Maintenance

A nano fingerprint-resistant coating creates a hydrophobic-oleophobic film so rain self-cleans the surface. Maintain with neutral cleaner and a soft cloth only — never steel wool or strong acids.

4. Three On-Site Quality Checks

Specifying railings for your project? Talk to ASPER engineers — finish samples before batch production, drawing review → sample → delivery → on-site acceptance.
