1. Why Can the Same Railing Quote Differ by 3x?
A railing quote = material + fabrication + surface finishing + installation + overhead/profit/tax. Material is usually 40-60% of direct cost, so the material grade sets the ceiling. Across 304 stainless, 316L stainless, hot-dip galvanized steel and aluminum, mill-to-factory costs differ by more than 4x.
2. How to Cost Material: The Five-Step Mill-to-Factory Method (Foshan, Aug 2026)
Do not compare raw mill prices. For engineering-scale purchases the real landed cost has five steps: ① mill/market price → ② slitting/leveling fee → ③ freight → ④ cutting loss (~5%) → ⑤ small-lot procurement premium (5-7%).

For external quotes, factories typically add a 15-25% buffer on material (e.g. 304 at 21 RMB/kg) — normal industry margin, not markup.
3. One Meter of 1200mm-High Railing: Material Cost Comparison

316L material is 4.5x galvanized; 304 is 3.7x. Add stainless argon welding, grinding and passivation labor (pricier than carbon-steel welding), and a 2-3x finished-quote spread is entirely normal — the material really does differ.
4. Fabrication and Finishing: The Second-Biggest Gap
- Stainless steel: argon welding + weld grinding + passivation/brushing; labor-heavy. Poor weld treatment rusts even good material.
- Hot-dip galvanized: cutting and welding destroy the zinc layer — touch-up zinc-rich paint is mandatory, or welds rust within 2 years. The hidden cost most buyers miss.
- Aluminum: anodizing or PVDF coating billed by area; wide color range, great for design-led projects and interior facades.
- Big trap: 201 stainless substituted for 304 — a ~3x price difference, exposed instantly by PMI spectrometer testing.

6. Three Quoting Pitfalls
- Put grade + heat number in the contract with on-site PMI testing — kill 201-for-304 substitution on paper.
- Low unit price is not low total cost: galvanized rails need re-coating every 3-5 years; lifecycle cost may exceed 304.
- Price aluminum per meter by section and wall thickness: hollow vs solid sections differ several-fold in weight — specify the quoting basis in writing.
