Most of the time the grade is genuine — the real failure is in the surface-treatment chain. Stainless steel does have a "self-healing" talent, but it depends on an invisible passive film. While the film is intact, the steel stays bright; when the film is destroyed and never repaired, corrosion starts at the breach. Foshan Asper New Material Co., Ltd. 1. What Happens After Welding: Skip Pickling & Passivation and You Pay for Years
Welding heat depletes chromium near the weld, creating a sensitized zone of sharply reduced corrosion resistance. The proper sequence is grinding → pickling → passivation, which removes the chromium-depleted layer and regenerates the passive film. Many low-price railings are ground but never pickled — so 6 to 12 months later, the first rust almost always starts at the weld. That is not 304's fault; the process simply was not finished.
2. Brushing Is Not "Just Polishing It a Bit"
A brushed finish (Ra ≈ 0.4–0.8 μm) looks simple, but what matters is consistent grain direction and uniform depth. If the grain on one post runs every which way with uneven coarseness, the railing shows up as a visible "smudge" under raking light. And if abrasive residue is left trapped in the grain, it becomes a future seedbed for rust. At acceptance, look at the full railing under side light: whether the grain runs continuously is an instant read on a factory's polishing skill.

The selection logic is simple: decide the environment first, then the finish. Coastal, poolside and acid-rain zones favor 316 + brushed; for long-term outdoor color, choose PVDF rather than PVD. 4. Site and Care: Stainless Is "Low-Maintenance", Not "No-Maintenance"
- Repair installation scratches on the spot: gouges and grinding sparks left untreated are planted rust seeds; cut edges and drilled holes are the spots everyone forgets
- Do not let the railing "soak" in dirty water: long contact with cement slurry, acid/alkali cleaners or salt residue destroys the passive film
- Routine cleaning: a neutral cleaner and a soft cloth wiped along the grain, once or twice a year, is enough to keep it bright
