Linear Drain & Concealed Manhole Cover Selection: Size the Water First

Manhole covers and linear drainage covers are the smallest line items in a landscape package — and the ones that fail together in the first heavy storm. The plaza ponds, the covers lift and shift, the covers rattle under traffic, and the paving reads as a patchwork. The instinct is to blame plate thickness. The real cause is almost always that the cover was selected on appearance, without sizing it to the runoff.

This article covers one idea: calculate the water, then choose the cover.

1. Size the Runoff First — Worked Example

Linear drainage is not selected by feel; it can be calculated. The simplified form:

Q = ψ × q × A ÷ 10,000 — Q design flow (L/s), ψ runoff coefficient, q rainfall intensity (L/(s·ha)), A catchment area (m²).

Typical coefficients: 0.85–0.9 for paving, 0.15 for planting, 0.3–0.5 for permeable paving. Take q from the local rainfall-intensity formula at a 3–5 year return period; in South China this commonly lands in the 300–400 L/(s·ha) range, but always use the local formula for final design.

Example: a sunken plaza with 200 m² of paving and 100 m² of planting, q = 350 L/(s·ha).

Q = (0.9 × 200 + 0.15 × 100) × 350 ÷ 10,000 = (180 + 15) × 0.035 ≈ 6.8 L/s.

With a slot drain rated at roughly 2.0 L/(s·m) of one-side inflow, the required effective channel length is 6.8 ÷ 2.0 ≈ 3.4 m; allow for blockage and specify 4 m or more. Switch to a grating drain at about 4.0 L/(s·m) and the same plaza needs only 1.7–2 m. The same plaza, twice the channel length, purely from the selection.

Rule of thumb: pedestrian areas favour slot drains (appearance), vehicular areas favour gratings (capacity), large catchments favour one-piece channels (performance). The biggest risk with slot drains is clogging — leaves, cigarette ends and silt can seal an 8 mm slot within two months. Design in a silt trap or an openable inspection section, and write scheduled jetting into the O&M regime.

3. Where Concealed Covers Meet Linear Covers

  1. Joint alignment — set the cover frame to the paving module (300 or 600 mm) and keep joint width uniform at 5–8 mm across the scheme. Misaligned joints make even the most expensive stone look cheap.
  2. Level — the cover surface sits 2–3 mm below the surrounding paving, so water enters the channel rather than sheeting across the cover.
  3. Fall continuity — channel fall no less than 0.5% (5 ‰ is the usual landscape recommendation), and the cross-section must stay continuous into the manhole. Never allow a reverse fall where the channel rises into the pit — it is the most easily hidden cause of standing water.

4. Five Specification Criteria for the Bill of Quantities

  1. Load class (GB/T 23858) — B125 for footways and retail frontage, D400 and above for carriageways, F900 for heavy-duty zones.
  2. Material and plate thickness — 304 stainless for visible decorative faces, face plate 3 mm or more. Load capacity comes from frame, base plate and stiffener design, not from plate thickness alone.
  3. Inflow capacity and slot width — require an inflow curve in L/(s·m), not just a slot dimension.
  4. Anti-rattle and anti-settlement — rubber gaskets, locating pins, and fully bedded fine-aggregate concrete under the frame.
  5. Anti-theft and anti-fall — integral locking with a dedicated key, plus a fall-arrest net with mesh no greater than 10 cm.

Can I estimate without a local rainfall formula? Yes, but keep a margin. Start at 300–400 L/(s·ha) for South China and apply a 1.2–1.5 safety factor; for final design use the project's own rainfall-intensity formula rather than borrowing figures from another city.

Can slot drains be used in vehicular areas? Not recommended. Narrow slots plus wheel loads combine clogging with fatigue deformation. Use gratings or one-piece channels in vehicular areas, with a load class of D400 or above.

Must decorative faces be 304? The visible face — whether paving-infill or a custom pattern — should be 304 for corrosion resistance and for brushed or PVD finishing. Ductile iron carries load well but reads industrial, so it belongs in non-visual zones. The two can be combined: iron for structure, 304 for the decorative face.
