Glass Railing & Balustrade: System & Specification Guide
Glass railings frame views without blocking them — the choice for waterfront promenades, museum terraces and modern offices. Here is what to specify so the system is safe, durable and code-compliant.
1. Glass Types
- Tempered (toughened) glass — minimum standard, 4–5× stronger than annealed.
- Laminated tempered glass (e.g. 8.76mm / 12.76mm) — recommended for balconies, stairs and overhead glazing: fragments stay bonded.
- Heat-soak tested glass reduces spontaneous breakage from nickel-sulfide inclusions.
2. Frameless vs Framed

3. Stainless Hardware
Specify 304 stainless for interior; 316 stainless for coastal, pool and chloride environments. Finishes: 240# brushed (hairline), mirror polished, or powder-coated. Use concealed fasteners and non-visible base plates for a clean line.
4. Loads & Codes
Check horizontal load (commonly ≥1.0 kN/m for residential, higher for public), infill impact requirements, glass thickness limits and handrail height (typically 900–1100mm).
