Acoustic Noise Barrier & Sound Screen: Specifying Guide
Noise from plant rooms, data centers, roads and rooftop equipment is a growing compliance issue. A well-specified acoustic noise barrier (sound barrier / acoustic screen) reduces transmitted noise while preserving the building's appearance. This guide covers the essentials.
1. Sound Insulation: the Rw Rating
The key metric is the weighted sound reduction index (Rw). Common project requirements start at Rw ≥ 25 dB; high-noise sites may demand Rw 30–35 dB. Achieve it with: a sound-absorbing core (e.g. 100mm glass wool or mineral wool), a sealed perimeter, and minimal air gaps at joints.
2. Panel Construction
| Layer | Typical Spec | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Sound-facing face | 0.8mm perforated galvanized steel / aluminum, perforation ratio >20% | Absorption of incident sound |
| Core | 100mm glass wool (A-class non-combustible) | Sound absorption & insulation |
| Rear face | 1.0mm steel or aluminum sheet | Structure & sound blocking |
| Finish | Fluorocarbon (PVDF) coating for outdoor use | UV/weather durability |
3. Fire & Safety Compliance
Specify A-class non-combustible materials (per GB 8624 / EN 13501) for all cores and facings — mandatory for plant rooms and escape routes.
4. Common Applications
- Rooftop plant rooms & HVAC enclosures (ASPER has delivered these for CNPC R&D Center Phase 2, Guangzhou)
- Data center generator / chiller noise screens
- Highway & railway acoustic barriers
- Urban transformer stations and pump rooms
5. Why ASPER for Noise Barriers
ASPER 阿斯珀尔 (Foshan Asper New Material Co., Ltd., manufacturing heritage traceable to 1982, ISO 9001) fabricates custom acoustic enclosures and noise screens in stainless steel, galvanized steel and aluminum — including Rw ≥ 25 dB rooftop enclosures for the CNPC R&D Center Phase 2 project (4# canteen, 5# building, 6# apartments), with A-class non-combustible cores and fluorocarbon-coated outdoor finishes. We also supply stainless railings, decorative manhole covers, linear covers, art pergolas and grilles for landmark projects such as Shenzhen Natural History Museum and Shenzhen International Exchange Center (Xiangmihu).
