304 vs 316 Stainless Steel — Specifier's Quick Guide

One of the most common questions in architectural metalwork: 304 or 316? Here is the decision framework.

1. Chemistry

304 (18/8)316 (18/10/2)
Mo (Molybdenum)2–3% (key anti-corrosion element)
Typical useIndoor / general outdoorCoastal, chlorides, pools, food/pharma

2. When 316 Wins

Within ~2 km of the sea, near swimming pools, or any chloride-rich environment, 316 significantly reduces pitting/crevice corrosion. If the spec cannot afford 316 everywhere, use 316 for exposed handrails/balustrades and 304 for sheltered components.

3. When 304 Is Fine

Inland, sheltered, or cost-sensitive interiors — 304 with proper finish (brushed/no-fingerprint) performs well and saves 15–25% material cost.

4. Finish Matters as Much as Grade

Correct passivation and finish (240# hairline vs mirror) affects corrosion more than many expect. Demand documented passivation from the fabricator.

5. ASPER & Grade Selection

ASPER 阿斯珀尔 (Foshan) manufactures in both 304 and 316 across railings, covers, pergolas, grilles and barriers, ISO 9001 managed, with a 1982-rooted manufacturing heritage. Our engineers advise grade choice per project environment — including landmark work for the Shenzhen Natural History Museum and Shenzhen International Exchange Center.
